Goodbye to Mill Creek

Because Noah was having some friends over today, and both Dixie and Josie found errands to run outside of the house, I figured I better find something to keep myself occupied too. So I went down to the History Museum and visited the exhibit on the Mill Creek neighborhood in downtown St. Louis. The neighborhood, which was a black metropolis within the city, was seized (through eminent domain) and razed in 1960 as part of an “urban renewal” campaign. Very little has been written about it, but I’m considering reading Vivian Gibson’s memoir, The Last Children of Mill Creek. She was actually at the exhibit today with a couple of her friends, but I didn’t recognize her until after she had already left.
