Death From Above

Noah came home this weekend and so we had our traditional Labor Day cookout on Saturday night. I forgot to take any pictures, but we did have an exciting visit from a juvenile hawk of some kind that I caught on the surveillance camera. He thought Selena looked tasty, and if Dixie hadn’t scared him off by screaming, it might...

State Visit

Dixie bought this heated birdbath a few years ago, so the birds would have a place in the winter to drink and bathe. This was our first visit by Missouri’s state bird.

Playing Hooky

Wednesday seemed like a good day to take off work and go to the zoo. The weather was cool, but not uncomfortably so, and we were about the only people there, so there were no lines for the train. We got to see some of the critters more active than usual – like the new polar bear – and Josie...

Trip to the WBS

We made a trip to the World Bird Sanctuary today mainly to see our new “brick” that was just installed, but also to see the Amazing Animal Encounters where they fly the birds back and forth over the audience’s heads. Today

The weather was nice today. Not your typical August day in St. Louis. Dixie and I played Bird Bingo with the kids; I had lunch with a college buddy whom I’ve not seen in 20 years; and I took this picture of our little man reading his book in the shade of the ash tree. It was a good day.

World Eagle Day

If you couldn’t tell, we’ve got a thing for birds around here. For Josie’s birthday, we went to the World Bird Sanctuary to celebrate World Eagle Day. We got to see a Bateleur eagle, which is native to Africa, and this one happens to be the only one of its kind in North America. Pretty awesome creature.

Josie’s Bird Day

We spent today celebrating our little girl turning eight years old. It’s hard to believe she’s eight already. She wanted a bird theme so Dixie decorated the cake with pictures Josie took on her camera, along with several other bird-themed snacks that were all yummy. We spent the morning at the World Bird Sanctuary because today also happened to be...

First Snow

We enjoyed our first snowfall of the year today. It was probably less than an inch, but it was enough for the kids to get outside and build some mini-snowmen, and have a ball, and for Dixie to get a few great shots of the birds. Photos are up in my album.

Staycation Day 6

Although many people are unaware of it, St. Louis County boasts a world-class wolf sanctuary. Originally founded by Marlin Perkins, the Endangered Wolf Center in Eureka houses several species of endangered wolves and foxes from around the world. We spent the final day of our staycation on a tour of the facility. I guess we had pretty good luck because...
