St. Louis Art Fair

I took Josie to the St. Louis Art Fair in Clayton today. I think she was surprised at the scale of it – about six city blocks filled with booths selling every kind of art imaginable. We also had some good food – street corn from one of the food trucks and we had a late lunch at a place...

Missouri History Museum

I took the kids to the History Museum to see the new and improved exhibit on the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. They did a great job putting it together and there are a ton of interesting artifacts on display, including a lead crystal punchbowl very similar to my grandmother Ellen’s. This might be our last homeschool “field trip” since...

Tradition!

Josie and I went to see Fiddler on the Roof at the Muny. She remembered a couple of the songs from when we watched the movie a while back. If I were a rich man, I would get season tickets so we could make this a family tradition.

Opening Night at the Muny

Tonight we went to see Les Miserables at the Muny. Grandma Linda shared a few of her season tickets with us this year because this is their last year going (we might have to buy their seats for next season!). It was a really good show.

Father’s Day 2024

I wanted to visit the National Museum of Transportation for Father’s Day this year and my family indulged me. We walked around in the heat checking out the trains and cars (including a beautiful Pontiac Fiero that makes me miss mine) and the other exhibits there. Then we went to Dalie’s Smokehouse for lunch and got some of the last...

From the Arts & Culture Department

I’m typically in charge of cultural education in our little homeschool, and this week was no exception. I took the kids first to see Moulin Rouge at the Fabulous Fox (great music! maybe even better than the original movie soundtrack) and they both really liked it. Then last night we went to the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra to see them...

Eclipse 2024

We drove down to Jackson, MO, to witness our second total solar eclipse, and it did not disappoint. I think we all agreed we liked this one better than the one in 2017. Not only did it last longer, but the shadow was darker and the colors were even more surreal. Plus, we got to see some looping prominences that...

A Nice Day Out

We took advantage of the nice weather today and went to the Minifig Shop, had lunch at Dewey’s Pizza, and then spent the afternoon at the zoo. I’m not going to have too many more opportunities like this. Have to grab them while I can.

Holiday Concert

The SLSO is temporarily performing out of the Stifel Theater downtown while Powell Hall is being renovated, but we maintained our annual tradition to see their Christmas Concert. This year included a couple of notable pieces – Charleston Christmas (Stephenson) and Tom Lehrer’s Hannukah in Santa Monica!

Abby’s Wedding

My goddaughter Abby Zyk got married at the St. Louis Basilica. It was a beautiful ceremony and a great reception at Twisted Tree. We are grateful for being a part of their special day and we wish her and Joe all the happiness in the world.

Jesus Christ Superstar

The musical Jesus Christ Superstar is currently touring to celebrate its 50th anniversary and it made a stop at the Fox, so I took the kids to see it. They really liked it, and now I’m hearing the songs coming out of Alexa.

Run Noah, Run!

Noah ran his first half-marathon today after several weeks of training. He finished in two hours, twenty-two minutes. He was pretty wiped out at the end – tired and hungry. But we’re proud of him for challenging himself and finishing!

Christmas Concert 2022

We missed a couple of years due to COVID, but we headed down to Powell Hall today to see and hear the SLSO and get into the Christmas spirit. They were pretty heavy on the jazz this year, which is okay, but sometimes I just want to hear the traditional arrangements. Still a great show and they played for almost...

Hannibal

The kids are reading Mark Twain right now, so it seemed like a good time to visit Hannibal. We booked a BnB and made an overnight trip of it. We saw his boyhood home, took a riverboat cruise, toured Rockcliffe Mansion, and walked through Mark Twain Cave. It was a good trip.

Balloon Glow

The kids had never been to the Balloon Glow before, so last night we packed a picnic dinner and hung out in Forest Park all evening. Afterwards, we stayed for the Golden Knights and the fireworks show.

Charity Gala

In my role as grantmaker for the Employee Community Fund at Boeing, I was hoping to get more invitations like this one. But after 3 years on the board, this is the first opportunity that has come along, so we took advantage of it. The charity, United Services for Children, provided a table for ECF at their Fly Me To...
