Hannibal

The kids are reading Mark Twain right now, so it seemed like a good time to visit Hannibal. We booked a BnB and made an overnight trip of it. We saw his boyhood home, took a riverboat cruise, toured Rockcliffe Mansion, and walked through Mark Twain Cave. It was a good trip.

Balloon Glow

The kids had never been to the Balloon Glow before, so last night we packed a picnic dinner and hung out in Forest Park all evening. Afterwards, we stayed for the Golden Knights and the fireworks show.

Pawpaws!

Although we planted these trees almost 10 years ago, this is the first season they actually bore any fruit – and boy are they tasty! Sometimes called the ‘custard apple,’ they have a soft texture like a banana with a flavor that is a cross between a mango and a pineapple. Yummy!

Charity Gala

In my role as grantmaker for the Employee Community Fund at Boeing, I was hoping to get more invitations like this one. But after 3 years on the board, this is the first opportunity that has come along, so we took advantage of it. The charity, United Services for Children, provided a table for ECF at their Fly Me To...

Cardinals vs Yankees

I sure wouldn’t have predicted a 3-game sweep of the Yankees, but that’s exactly what the Cardinals delivered this weekend and we got to see the last and most exciting game of them all. I’m glad the kids will have memories of such a notable game. The Cards won 12-9 and we got to see Yadi make his 1000th career...

Visit to Albin’s House

We figured it had been about 7 years since we last saw each other. But he hasn’t changed a bit, and we had a good time hanging out on a Saturday. I drove down to Ozark, MO early that morning. We went to Bass Pro Shops to do some shooting and had lunch at Hemingway’s. He and Erin cooked dinner...

Nighthawk for my Birthday

It’s a faux Lego brand, but it’s not a bad model and is definitely recognizable as the iconic F-117. It took me less than an hour to put it together, and it is currently on display next to the faux Lego F-15 I got last year.

Spirit of St. Louis Airshow

I took the family to the St. Louis Airshow this weekend. This was a good year to go because the Blue Angels were performing and in addition to all of the other aircraft they had on static display, the C-17 was there. It was hot and crowded, but not unbearable, and the kids enjoyed seeing all of the planes flying....

A Day Downtown

I took today off work to extend the already long weekend, and I took the kids on a staycation trip downtown. We made a quick stop at the Scott Joplin House and then headed down to the Arch grounds. On our way from the parking garage, we also stopped at the marker where Fort San Carlos is thought to have...

Drivers Beware!

Noah took the written portion of his driver’s test and passed on his first try! That means we now begin many hours of practice driving so he can develop his skills before the driving portion. This is a new chapter and I’m very proud of him.

Back to the Art

It’s been over two years since we made a trip to the St. Louis Art Museum, so I thought it was time we rectified that situation. We saw an impressive exhibit called Painting on Stone which documented the practice of 16th century painters creating works on slabs of various kinds of stone that had been burnished to a very smooth...

Worldwide Lego Idea

I just finished putting this together today. I’ve bought a number of the Lego Ideas sets (13 so far) since the original site went live in 2008, and there are some sets that I see and I just know I have to have them (see Christmas 2020), and this was one of those sets. It’s a really cool idea and...

Bye 2021!

The year certainly had some highlights, but for the most part it was a repeat of 2020. This was supposed to be the year that we restored normality, but the Delta and Omicron variants had other plans. Not to mention all of the idiots who refuse to get vaccinated because of some misguided neo-Luddite protest. I can honestly say that...

Good To Gogh

For Christmas, Grandma Linda gave us tickets to see the Beyond Van Gogh exhibit here in St. Louis. It was a really cool way to experience his artwork and learn a bit about his troubled life.

Haul Out The Holly

Because I had extra vacation this year, I decided to take off the entire week of Thanksgiving. We wrapped up the week by resuming our annual pilgrimage to Meert Tree Farm because we need a little Christmas NOW!

Haunted Garage 2021

It had been several years since I last set up the haunted garage. Since the kids weren’t trick-or-treating this year, they asked if we could set it up. We didn’t get a lot of visitors this time around, but it was still fun constructing everything and making the house look spooky.
